Valheim is the eponymous tenth world that serves as a purgatory for the Forsaken.

Background[]

According to the lore, it was once connected to the World-Tree along with the other Nine Worlds in Norse mythology and was considered the tenth in that order.

At some point, Odin severed the boughs of the World-Tree that led to Valheim after he cast down his foes to this world and designated it as a prison for them. While it was considered a place of exile and left to drift in space unanchored, life on Valheim still persisted, albeit somewhat uneasily. Various kingdoms rose and fell in Valheim, all completely unseen or ignored by the gods.

However, when Odin noticed that his enemies, since dubbed "the Forsaken", were beginning to grow in strength, he sent the spirits of fallen warriors to be reborn on Valheim to defeat them. Should these warriors succeed, they will earn the favor of the gods and be admitted into Odin's grand halls of Valhalla.

Inhabitants[]

Valheim is inhabited by many creatures and wildlife and consists of numerous biomes, with each biome being home to different creatures. The biomes are largely akin to the kinds of biomes you would find on a typical terrestrial planet such as Earth, including Meadows, Black Forest, Swamps, Mountains, Plains and Oceans.

There are, however, a few unconventional biomes that exist as well, such as the cindered Ashlands and the cryptic Mistlands. The world was once inhabited by a thriving population of humans, some of them leaving messages behind in the form of Runestones. However, the humans decided to go to war with the gods and were retaliated against to extinction, leaving only their ruined structures and reanimated corpses behind. The only humans known to exist here currently are the player characters that Odin sends to deal with his sworn enemies.
