Storing extra stones using stone piles is generally less space-efficient than using chests. However, it is possible to tightly pack stone piles in the same area, provided that the stone piles all have the same orientation, and are placed on a flat surface like a stone floor. This results in a "hyper dense" stone pile which is highly space-efficient.
