Lox are aggressive creatures found in Plains. They are an enlarged fusion of both a lizard and an ox, with shaggy brown hair and reptilian skin. Lox can be tamed which allows them to be bred and ridden.

Taming[]

For general taming information and strategies, see Taming.

Because lox tend to stay in herds and wander back to the same location, it is possible to tame large groups of lox even early in the game by periodically sprinting through the plains and scattering the cloudberries around places where the herds gather. Alternatively, with a decent Sneak (Skill) (and carefully watching your surroundings) it is possible to sneak at single lox (or small herds) and disperse the cloudberries this way. It is recommended to not go below 50 stamina when doing this so you can run away if spotted.

Once most or all of them are tame, Deathsquitos and Fulings will often attack them instead of the player. With a number of tame lox, there will usually be one between the player and a new spawn. However, without adequate healing, some of the lox are liable to eventually die if the area is active at night or during certain invasions.

This strategy saves you from having to build pens for the lox, but the risk of death is high while scattering seeds. If your armor does not protect you from a Deathsquito attack, it may be ideal to leave everything in chests except cloudberries and flint spears. A rudimentary shelter with a portal in it can be used to safely enter the plains and to keep the area active while the lox are being tamed.

Riding[]

Tamed lox can be utilized as mounts. First, create a Lox saddle, then equip it to a lox by assigning the saddle to a hot key and using it while close to the creature. Directional keys will not cause the lox to turn while riding. Instead, the player must move the camera and the lox will always move straight in the direction that the camera is facing. A lox can move either at walking or sprinting speed - it cannot reverse.

A ridden lox is a very powerful companion. In addition to retaining their impressive health and damage resistances, a sprinting lox is faster than even the most high sprint-level players, while also enjoying the benefit of not being slowed down by equipped armor. A ridden lox also completely ignores a player's carried weight, able to move and even sprint while the rider is encumbered.

A mounted lox has 240 points of stamina which drain at approximately the same rate as a player's while sprinting, however leveling the Riding skill both increases the speed of a ridden lox as well as reducing the amount of stamina drained. It is important to note that a lox's stamina regenerates much, much slower than a player's, one point is regained roughly every 4 seconds while the creature has been recently fed, and one every 10 seconds while it is hungry.

While it is not currently possible to utilize a player's weapons while riding (trying to do so results in the player instantly dismounting as soon as the attack key is pressed) a lox at full sprint is capable of trampling most other creatures underfoot, dealing heavy damage when it comes into contact with them. Additionally, when not making the lox move, it will attack nearby enemies like it would do when unsaddled.

Breeding[]

Lox can breed provided the lox is;

  • happy and well-fed with Cloudberries, Flax, or Barley
  • and there is another lox within 8 meters
  • and no more than 4 lox within 20 meters
  • and they are not under a roof

Once met, the lox will accumulate love points with each other until the pregnancy starts. Pregnancy will last a minimum of two minutes, after which the birth of the baby lox is random chance.

Once born, the baby lox will take 1 hour and 40 minutes to mature into an adult.

Notes[]

  • The name 'Lox' is a fusion of the words 'lizard' and 'ox', which reflects their design.
  • The trader, Haldor, has a tamed lox named Halstein that can be found in his camp. Hildir has two tamed lox named Blåbär and Hallon.
  • Approaching a wild lox will always frighten it and cause it to become aggressive to the player.
  • Lox can project their melee damage a considerable distance forward by rearing up and smashing down with their front hooves. When digging ditches to block them, this must be kept in mind; a lox does not have to be able to cross a narrow ditch to destroy structures on the other side.
  • Lox meat is very healthy and a good basic HP food. Lox meat pie has nearly the same health and stamina gain as serpent stew, which were the best overall health foods until the Mistlands release. One advantage Lox-based food has over Serpent-based food is accessibility: Lox can be tamed and bred, whereas Serpents must be found.
